Ambien is approved for the short term treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty falling asleep. It is not designed as a long‐term solution. Most regulatory labels emphasize that it should be used for as short a time as possible, because of risks of tolerance, dependence, and reduced effectiveness over time.
